The removal of the large bronze sculpture from the west lawn in front of the Library to accommodate the Library’s planned expansion marks the start of our new story. The beloved sculpture, titled Miss Nitro, will undergo conservation efforts before it’s relocated to another prominent site in Highland Park. You can read more about the piece, designed by American sculptor Peter Voulkos, here (who knew it was named after an exotic dancer?!).
The expansion will create an even better community space as the Library is reimagined. Information from a community input survey along with focus groups and findings from a 2017 assessment were utilized to identify facility needs to help the Library meet the community’s needs and desires for an expanded physical space. What’s planned? A state-of-the-art makerspace where all ages can design, create, and innovate. An enhanced area for children to play and explore — with more space for books, too. An accessible and enlarged archive open to the public that preserves the city’s history, honoring Highland Park’s legacy. Flexible space and increased capacity to connect and learn at Library programs in the new Community Meeting Room, and access for all with an ADA-compliant elevator and restrooms.
